How To Jump Start Your Success Even If You Are Lost, Confused, And Lack Self Confidence

Aug 24, 2021

“Miss a meal if you have to, but don’t miss a book.” — Jim Rohn

One of the fastest ways to get the results you want in life, whether in health, wealth, or relationships, is to learn from others that have already been through the struggle. One way to do this is through reading or listening to books.

I wish I could shout from the rooftops the unbelievable importance of reading as a habit! But then I’m pretty sure people may just think I’m crazy.

Most of my most important life lessons, I did not learn in school. Many I’ve learned from my family and environment, and many still, from the books I’ve read.
If you’ve read my blog post on How My Teenage Pregnancy Saved My Life, you may have a better understanding of why self-development became so important to me. In this post, I wanted to share 10 of my favourite books I’ve encountered on my journey so far (in no particular order).

One of the first things I did on my self-development journey, was enrol in a 12 Step course. Now maybe you’re thinking …12 Step…isn’t that an AA program or a program for addicts? It absolutely is, but I was told it was also a program for people who come from dysfunctional families, and on a more comfortable note, that all families are dysfunctional because no one is perfect.

I learned a lot about myself during 12 Step and realized there was a lot I needed to be healed from. Here I was introduced to the first book on my list:

1. The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie.

This book is made up of daily meditations, insights, and reflections. These manageable chunks allow for easy reading and reflection and make the implementation of the material a breeze.

Shortly after my run-in with anxiety and panic attacks, I did some research and came across this classic book:

2. How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie.
Stories of fear, faith, and courage allowed me to look at life through different lenses and I learned some great techniques that helped me in my healing journey.

Dale Carnegie impressed me so much with How to Stop Worrying and Start Living that I was eager to get into more of his work! Next up, another classic:

3. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.
This book was a game-changer and I recommend it to EVERYONE!! I mean literally, I made my entire household read it and have told countless others about it. If everyone read this book and applied the knowledge in it, the world would be a happier place.
Number four on my list:

4. The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman is another favourite of mine.
Deepening my understanding of human communication and how to really love the people around me, this book helped enrich and deepen my relationships with others, especially those I love.

5. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

After reading this book, I thought to myself “Wow, he really covered it all!”  Timeless and priceless wisdom that is beyond the shallow scope of this world, this book is foundational for any successful person- and when I say successful, I am not speaking solely about monetary success, but rather that these concepts are applicable in all spheres of life.

Jim Kwik’s
6. Limitless is up next.
I had never learned that it was possible to learn how to learn! You might need to read that sentence again :) Training your brain is indeed a crucial part of taking care of your health as well as maximizing your efficiency in how you operate in life.

7. The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss blew my mind!

Seemingly rogue in his thinking, Tim Ferriss breaks down his methods and numerous resources for acquiring time, money, and mobility while carving out the life you want. Definitely worthwhile to expand your mind and consider avenues you may have never thought possible.

8. The Secrets Trilogy by Russell Brunson.

I admit I put three books under one heading! They are Dot Com Secrets, Expert Secrets, and Traffic Secrets. I couldn’t choose just one because they all relate to each other so seamlessly. Russel Brunson has put everything into these books so they end up being way more than just a casual read, but more like study/reference books that will help you take your business and marketing to the next level. Additionally, these books are easy to read and understand with great visuals!

9. Spark Joy by Marie Kondo.

Yes, I did it! I Marie Kondo’ed my entire house! (I love how her name is now a verb :) It took a few months of focus and effort but I have no regrets! I operate best in a clean and clear, peaceful environment, so I was grateful for this step-by-step book to guide me through.

10. The 5 am Club by Robin Sharma.

To be honest, I have not yet finished this book at the time I am writing this, but I have found it so impactful so far that I had to include it. Lessons in the form of a transporting and capturing story- brilliant!! Lots of gold nuggets in this book emphasizing the importance of our morning routine and habits. Definitely engaging and incredibly well written!

And that’s it, folks! It was hard to choose only ten, but it’s a great start.

I hope that you will take some time to invest in yourself and your personal development. Reading or listening to a personal growth book for 30 minutes a day can make the world of a difference in how you see things, think and act. Until next time, cheers to your happiness, your success, and the positive impact you will leave on the world as a result!
